California College of the Arts is looking for a Senior Designer to join their team. The Senior Designer is the visual and graphic design lead for the Office of Marketing and Communications, creating digital and print solutions that support the creative and educational mission of the college. This role is responsible for bringing the CCA brand to life across all integrated marketing projects, extending the brand with fresh and thoughtful direction. The Senior Designer works collaboratively with other team members and stakeholders throughout the college to develop and implement creative design solutions, ensuring all designed materials articulate the creative culture of the college and exemplify design excellence within our visual brand standards.

Founded in 1907, California College of the Arts (CCA) is an independent art college with 21 undergraduate programs in architecture, design, fine arts, visual studies, and writing. The college also has graduate programs in architecture, comics, curatorial practice, design, design strategy, film, fine arts, visual and critical studies, and writing. Through these programs, the college has created a dynamic and interdisciplinary environment. Main Responsibilities:

Design - 75% of time

  • Lead and implement integrated and strategic design solutions across a range of marketing materials for student recruitment, advancement, and other areas of the college.
  • Design print materials include brochures, postcards, posters, booklets, the institutional magazine, packet material, signage, and more.
  • Create visually compelling infographics that provide context to statistics and tell a story.
  • Create digital design solutions across a range of platforms including mobile, web, email, and more.
  • Working closely with Web Producer, create wireframes, layouts, and responsive/mobile-friendly designs for cca.edu site and email campaigns.
  • Ensure web pages and emails render properly in major browsers and email platforms; stay abreast of emerging technologies and best practices relating to UI/UX and accessibility.
  • Prepare digital files for print production, including layout and image manipulation for professional printing, and communicate with print vendors to achieve timely and high-quality outcomes.
  • Production work such as hand cutting and hanging select collateral; measuring and setting up cut and non-cut vinyl, etc.
  • Produce sketches, storyboards, decks, and comps to visualize ideas.
  • Take work from concept to final execution within deadlines and budgets.
  • Ensure all Office of Marketing & Communications design creations adhere to and express the college's visual brand identity with creativity and integrity; provide feedback on external design creations for brand consistency as needed.
  • Maintain currency with design industry trends and best practices.

Strategy - 15% of time

  • Generate clear ideas and concepts in tandem with the content team.
  • In forums ranging from presentations to informal conversations, clearly articulate conceptual ideas and design rationale to stakeholders to demonstrate thinking behind design solutions.
  • Understand marketing objectives, target audiences, business contexts, and strategic positioning to achieve goals. Work with team to develop project briefs and strategies.
  • Seek input and incorporate feedback from stakeholders as needed to ensure the success of each project.

Administration - 10% of time

  • Supervise the Junior Visual Designer (part-time) and freelance designers, providing creative direction and feedback.
  • Maintain CCA's visual brand guidelines; expand and update as needed.
  • Create design guidelines and standards for cca.edu to ensure visual brand consistency.
  • Maintain organized, clean, original files in shared project-management and digital-asset-management systems.

Key Collaborations:

  • Project Manager(s): build out project plans and communicate design needs, bandwidth, and constraints for each project.
  • Director of Content and Creative Strategy: develop integrated marketing campaigns, coordinate project and creative briefs internally and with clients, coordinate content and design needs, prioritization
  • Web Producer
  • Institutional partners/clients

Supervisory Responsibilities: 

Junior Designer (part-time)

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design or Visual Communication
  • 5+ years of professional experience creating print, digital, and web design
  • Strong portfolio of past work demonstrating creativity, skills, and experience with all aspects of design including typography, color, responsive web design, print production, image selection and manipulation, etc.
  • Deep experience working with established brand guidelines as well as developing, and evolving brand identity standards
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite
  • Self-starter capable of working both independently and as a member of a team
  • Creative collaborator with proven ability to give and receive feedback graciously
  • Team player with strong communication, collaboration and presentation skills
  • Ability to prepare, preflight, and proof files for print, including exporting and packing files for printers

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience using G Suite applications for file sharing and communication
  • Basic knowledge of HTML, CSS, Sketch
  • Experience using project-management and digital-asset-management systems (we use Teamwork and Bynder)
